P/Grigg-Skjellerup was observed to pass within 200 km of the line of s
ight to an anonymous faint star on the 1992 July 8 UT. The stars brigh
tness was attenuated by 35% at closest approach by the comet. This res
ult, combined with the faintness of the coma, suggests the presence of
a dust jet in close proximity to, and emanating from, the nucleus of
P/Grigg-Skjellerup similar to that observed in spacecraft images of th
e nuclear region of P/Halley.
