This paper presents some results on prevalence of drug use among high
schools students derived from the national survey of drug use in the s
cholar community that was taken by the Mexican Institute of Psychiatry
and the Ministry of Public Education in 1991; the results are from si
x states: Jalisco, Distrito Federal, Baja California, Tamaulipas, Chia
pas and Oaxaca. Among the most relevant data are: Tobacco and alcohol
are the drugs more frequently consumed by the students, the other toxi
c substances have lower rates, inhalants specially among males, are th
e preferred substances followed by marijuana and anphetamines. It is p
rominent the fact that for the first time this population reports havi
ng experimented with ''crack''. The states with higher rates of consum
ption are: Baja California, Jalisco and Distrito Federal. In relation
to other associated variables like perceived availability of drugs, st
udents reports that is easier to get marijuana than heroin or cocaine.
In friends consume the greater percentages are in the entities that h
ave more elevated indexes of consumption.
