F. Nachbar et al., CIRCUMSCRIBED BULLOUS DERMATOSIS AND CUTA NEOUS NECROSIS CAUSED BY EXTRAVASATION OF INFUSION FLUID, Dermatosen in Beruf und Umwelt, 42(1), 1994, pp. 27-30
Extravasation of fluids frequently occurs in patients receiving regula
r intravenous infusions. Usually, this is not accompanied by severe ti
ssue damage. However in some cases the extravasated fluid may cause se
vere local reactions including deep necrosis. We report a patient with
extended blistering and cutaneous necrosis following extravasation of
commonly used nutritive infusion fluid on the dorsum of the right foo
t. The disorder could easily be discriminated from other possibly unil
ateral bullous eruptions and necroses in this case. Pathogenic mechani
sms of tissue damage by extravasated fluids are discussed Moreover, so
me guidelines for preventing severe complications of infusion therapy
are proposed.
