Some existing experimental data on the uniaxial compressive strength o
f porous rocks have been re-examined in relation to the suction of the
specimens. It is shown that from pF 0 to pF 5 the rock strength is li
ttle affected but from pF 5 to pF 7 the strength depends markedly on s
uction. It is suggested that at low moisture contents, suction contrib
utes to rock strength in a similar way to its well known contribution
to soil strength.
