Abstract
Based on field investigation, theoretical analysis and model testing, the authors believe that the horizontal tensile stress caused by gravi ty at the top and bottom of big voids or holes is the primary reason f or the generation of vertical joints in loess. This paper explains the generation mechanism of vertical joints in loess from the viewpoint o f mechanics for the first time.
