European Associaton of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) issued a standard (guid
elines) in April, 1994. In that, the issues indicated in the title (in
cluding the wildlife and safari parks also) have been summarized in 18
pages and 101 points. Although protection of wildlife and their livin
g places has also been mentioned in six animal welfare conventions of
EU, no stand has been taken in cast: of zoo animals. Basic conclusion
of the standard is: zoo should ensure welfare - both in physical and s
ocial respects - for the animals. All the paragraphs of the standard h
ave been reflecting that (environment, movement, pregnancy, suckling,
feeding, drinking water; professional staff, veterinarian and his clin
ic, etc.). All these have been briefly summarized.
