The paper presents a systematic study of the steps encountered in the
synthesis of the variamine base. The optimum conditions of obtaining t
he intermediate have been established, resulting in improved end-produ
ct yields. The experimental work led to significant modifications of t
he reaction parameters in the reduction step. This allowed for the dim
inishing of the reaction time and improving the end-product yield afte
r the first two process steps. The difficulties mentioned in the liter
ature, concerning the removal of the sulfonic group, have been surpass
ed there thus achieving a rigorous desulfonation control.
