A nonperturbative calculation is carried out for the interaction poten
tial of spinless static nucleons. The potential is determined as the a
verage value of the total ground-state energy of the model under inves
tigation. The ground state is constructed, by minimizing the energy av
eraged over a trial state chosen in a special way. This state is obtai
ned by applying a sequence of canonical transformations to meson vacuu
m. The resulting potential ensures the existence of a bound state of t
wo nucleons, i.e., the deuteron.
