Metal phthalocyanine derivatives exhibit high electron transfer abilit
ies, although they are insoluble in most common organic solvents, whic
h has inhibited them from being employed in functional colorants that
can take advantage of their useful electron transfer properties. Solub
le metal phthalocyanine derivatives, metal octakis(hexoxymethyl)phthal
ocyanines, and a new type of phthalocyanine derivative, metal anthraqu
inocyanines, have been synthesised in this study. The electron transfe
r behaviour of the phthalocyanines and anthraquinocyanines, were exami
ned with cyclic voltammetry. This showed one irreversible oxidation an
d one pair of reduction potentials. Cyclic voltammograms of metal anth
raquinocyanines exhibited the irreversible redox behaviour. The electr
on transfer properties of metal phthalocyanine derivatives were influe
nced by the ring current of pi electrons about the conjugated system.
Ring currents of metal phthalocyanine derivatives consisted of five lo
ops, whereas those for metal anthraquinocyanines were made up of a sim
ple loop.
