Abstract
The mean erythropoietin concentration in the cord blood of neonates wh ose mothers were smokers was greater than in neonates whose mothers we re not smokers. There was a significant positive correlation between e rythropoietin and hemoglobin concentrations. The findings suggest that approximately one of five fetuses who are exposed to tobacco smoke ar e in a state of chronic hypoxia.
