Abstract
The spatial and temporal distribution of cerebral metabolites and pH(i ) were examined in the cortex during spreading depression. Acidificati on and marked depression in the energy status of the tissue was eviden t at the wavefront of spreading depression. In its aftermath, the resi dual activation of glycolysis and accumulation of cGMP persisted for m inutes after a relatively rapid restoration of high-energy phosphates and pH(i).
