Lipoprotein(a) is a major inherited risk factor for atherosclerosis. M
any of ifs activities depend on ifs plasminlike component, apolipoprot
ein(a). In vitro studies suggest that apolipoprotein(a) could enhance
lipid deposition through binding to sites in the vessel wall, interfer
e with fibrinolysis, and modulate smooth muscle cell activity. Human a
nd animal studies will be necessary to establish the physiologic impor
tance of these mechanisms.
