Abstract
The theoretical foundation of Stone's tensor surface harmonic theory o f cluster bonding is investigated. A wave equation in matrix form is d erived which provides a proper description of the vector surface harmo nics. This equation may be associated with a vector particle on a sphe re. The generators of the corresponding Lie group are determined using the method of prolongations.
