For the specific detection of alpha-L-arabinofuranosidase (alpha-L-AFa
se) activity in isoelectric focused gels, 6-bromo-2-naphthyl-alpha-L-a
rabinofuranoside (BN-alpha-L-Araf) was synthesized by the condensation
of 2,3,5-tri-O-benzoyl-alpha-L-arabinofuranosyl bromide and 6-bromo-2
-naphthol. Alpha-L-AFase activity had been detected in a gel after iso
electric focusing by using the synthesized BN-alpha-L-Araf as a substr
ate, and the detection for the enzyme activity was more sensitive than
protein detection with Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250.
