A flow-visualisation study of the near two-dimensional flow of an elas
tomer mass in front of a fixed blade is described. Streamlines and the
flow of free surface of the elastomer are analysed for a particular b
lade geometry parallel to the roll axis, by using a specially designed
rig and an associated image-analysis system. It is intended that the
results will be used for comparison with the predictions of flow patte
rns from finite-element modelling of the rubber-mixing process.
