The conformations of the complexes formed by the ionophore nigericin w
ith Na+ and K+ in CDCl3 solution determined by ROESY NMR and distance
geometry computations are in good agreement with the X-ray crystallogr
aphic data. The structures with the Na+ ion are more compact than thos
e with the K+ ion, as the latter have a wider cage for the ion.
