Abstract
1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole (1) reacts with haloalkyl trialkylsilanes [Hal(CH2)(n)SiMe(2)R] to give 4-nitroimidazole derivat ives 3 and acetaldehyde. This process involves at least two reaction s teps, N-alkyl quaternization and elimination of the hydroxyethyl group .
