Intraoperative studies of focal neuropathies have become increasingly
common both as an aid to the localization of the neuropathy and a mean
s of monitoring the integrity of the nerve in the course of surgery. S
uccess very often depends on careful attention to the technical proble
ms presented by working in the operating theater. Despite these diffic
ulties, assessment of conduction directly from the exposed nerve offer
s opportunities for better understanding the pathophysiology of these
neuropathies and correlating these findings with conventional electrod
iagnostic studies. (C) 1994 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
