We have determined the crystal and molecular structure of trans-bis(ac
etonitrile)dichloroplatinum(II). Crystallographic data for trans-Pt(CH
3CN)(2)Cl-2: monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 5.0453(9), b = 6.989
6(5), c = 11.962(1) Angstrom, beta = 101.40(1)degrees, V = 413.5 Angst
rom(3), Z = 2, D-x = 2.796 gcm(-3), mu(CuK alpha) = 377.5 cm(-1), R =
0.0502, wR = 0.0529 for 43 variables and 807 reflections with F > 3 si
gma(F). The Pt atom is in a planar configuration with N and Cl atoms i
n trans positions. The shortest distance between two Pt atoms correspo
nds to the length of the crystallographic a-axis (5.045 Angstrom). Add
itionally, we present optical absorption data of the cis- and trans-is
omer.
