Abstract
Feeding experiments with [24-C-14] 24-methylenecholesterol and mixture s of this sterol and [7-H-3] 24-methylenecholesterol were performed to study the biosynthesis of withanolides in the plant Acnistus breviflo rus. The results indicate that the side chain of the sterol precursor should be broken between C-24 and C-25 to give an intermediate which f ollows the biogenetic pathway into withaferin A, jaborosalactone A and jaborosalactone D.
