This paper analyses the current status of government-funded marine sci
ence and technology (MST) in India. It begins with a review of the exi
sting infrastructure for central funding of science and technology in
general, followed by the specific area of MST. The known resources of
India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are then examined in the light o
f the major programmes currently given priority for central government
-funded MST. The paper concludes by highlighting some of the factors l
ikely to affect future MST policies and offers some tentative suggesti
ons for areas worthy of being awarded increased priority.
