Abstract
In the Grampian Region of Scotland, a new 10 year heart health initiat ive, 'Keeping the heart Beat in Grampian' was launched in October 1991 . Although this programme is based on a number of well-tested health p romotion principles it is unique in a number of aspects. The concepts of community ownership, corporate identity and people empowerment have been extended to a much greater degree. The programme is registered a s a private company with charitable status so that management, decisio n-making and budgetary control are vested totally in the community.
