An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an agar gel immunodif
fusion (AGID) test are described which detected antibody against Jembr
ana disease virus in infected Bali cattle. Both tests were specific an
d did not detect antibody in cattle from areas where clinical Jembrana
disease has not been detected. The ELISA detected antibody in all inf
ected cattle and had greater sensitivity than the AGID which detected
antibody in less than 50% of infected cattle at any single time after
infection. The antibody response to the virus was delayed; antibody wa
s not detected by ELISA in a majority of infected cattle until 11 week
s after infection and a maximum antibody response was detected 23 to 3
3 weeks after infection. Antibody was still detectable 59 weeks after
infection.
