The antigravitropic activity of a series of hydro-1-hydroxy-3-oxo-1-is
obenzofurancarboxamides, not yet reported in the literature, was studi
ed. Several derivatives of the class were as active as the N-1-naphthy
lphthalamic acid (NPA) used as the reference standard in the assay on
germinating seeds of Lens esculenta. Activity of the compounds of the
class may be due to their 2-(2-arylamino-1,2-dioxoethyl)benzoic tautom
eric forms (B-I), which possess all the structural requirements of Phy
totropins. Several derivatives were also subjected to a herbicidal ass
ay against some common weeds: high herbicidal activity was found in on
e derivative.
