A temperature-driven anchoring transition strongly influenced by ionic
impurities appears in a nematic liquid crystal composed of centrosymm
etric molecules. Two anchoring parameters, the tilt angle and the anch
oring strength, were measured. The observed phenomena are explained as
a result of a balance between the orienting tendencies of electric do
uble layers and direct molecular interactions at the interface.
