Sb. Whitaker et Je. Bouquot, IDENTIFICATION AND SEMI-QUANTIFICATION OF ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE RECEPTORS IN PERIPHERAL GIANT-CELL LESIONS OF THE JAWS, Journal of periodontology, 65(3), 1994, pp. 280-283
CASES OF PERIPHERAL GIANT CELL LESIONS Of the jaws (PGCL) were evaluat
ed for the detection of estrogen and progesterone receptor proteins (E
RS/PRS) utilizing immunoperoxidase staining. Staining for ERS was stro
ngly positive in three cases when examining the mononuclear cell popul
ation. Another two cases were weakly positive. In addition, an occasio
nal ER+ multinucleated giant cell could be observed in three of the ca
ses examined. PRS immunoreactivity was essentially negative in all cas
es. It is well known that the PGCL has a marked female predilection. T
his, coupled with the present findings, gives further evidence that so
me PGCL may be at least partially under hormonal influence.
