This study was designed to examine whether theophylline, an adenosine
receptor antagonist, affects cardiac adaptation to ischemia during pro
gression of repetitive balloon inflations of percutaneous transluminal
coronary angioplasty (PTCA). Theophylline abolished this cardiac adap
tation, suggesting that endogenous adenosine is a key mediator for car
diac adaptation during PTCA.
