Abstract
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D are involved in the maintenanc e of acid-base homeostasis by enhancing urinary acid excretion and mob ilizing extrarenal buffer present in bone. Acidosis may alter hormonal effect and metabolism. Conclusions reached from experimental and clin ical states of hormonal deficiency and excess must take into account d ifferences due to species and methodologies. This paper critically rev iews the role of PTH and vitamin D on acid-base metabolism.
