Hemochromatosis is a disorder characterized by cirrhosis of the liver
with increased iron stores primarily in the parenchymal cells of the l
iver. Horses with hemochromatosis have signs of liver failure, cirrhos
is, and excess iron in the liver, but do not necessarily have saturati
on of the iron transport system of the serum, as occurs in people with
familiar hemochromatosis. Hemochromatosis should be considered in the
differential diagnosis of chronic liver disease in horses.
