Sw. Casteel et al., AMARANTHUS RETROFLEXUS (REDROOT PIGWEED) POISONING IN CATTLE, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 204(7), 1994, pp. 1068-1070
Amaranthus retroflexus (redroot pigweed) intoxication is rare in cattl
e; however, during times of drought, when appropriate forage is unavai
lable, cattle may ingest toxic amounts. Cattle consuming leafy portion
s of the plant develop nephrotoxicosis, and do not develop the signs o
f nitrate poisoning associated with ingestion of the stems.
