Pathways and mechanisms of oxidative phosphorylation uncoupling by lon
g-chain fatty acids in liver, heart, and skeletal muscle mitochondria
are considered It is concluded that there are at least three different
pathways of fatty acid uncoupling, namely: 1) a Ca2+-dependent cyclos
porin A-sensitive pathway; 2) uncoupling which is inhibited by carboxy
atractylate or other inhibitors of the ATP/ADP-antiporter; 3) uncoupli
ng due to the low protonophoric activity of fatty acids.
