Abstract
The binding of amphiphilic dyes to biomembranes is described as a dist ribution equilibrium between a three-dimensional and a two-dimensional phase. Ostwald-type coefficients and formal binding constants are mea sured for lipid vesicles and hemicyanine dyes with different hydrophil ic-hydrophobic balance. The staining of neuron membranes is discussed as a basis for optical recording of membrane voltage by hemicyanine dy es.
