I. Simkovic et al., FRACTIONATION OF WHEAT-STRAW MEAL AFTER PRETREATMENT WITH ACIDIFIED ZINC-CHLORIDE SOLUTIONS, Carbohydrate polymers, 23(2), 1994, pp. 111-114
Wheat straw was treated with acidified ZnCl2 solutions and the fractio
ns obtained were compared with results obtained by NaOH treatments. Th
e yields of water-soluble polysaccharides are smaller but they are les
s contaminated with lignin than analogous fractions obtained by NaOH t
reatment. The molecular weights of the ZnCl2 fractions are greater tha
n the NaOH-treated fractions. The arabinose and glucuronic acid residu
es are hydrolysed from the polysaccharides by ZnCl2 treatment. Samples
treated with ZnCl2 could be more effectively desalted by washing with
ethanol than by precipitation in acetone. NaOH-pretreated samples cou
ld not be desalted by washing with ethanol.
