Abstract
We describe a novel, integrated organic-inorganic waveguide/photodetec tor with an internal quantum efficiency of (53 +/- 15%). Low-loss (2.7 +/- 0.3 dB/cm at lambda = 1.064 mu m for 10-mu m wide waveguides) cry stalline organic waveguides are grown directly onto the pre-processed InGaAs photodetector by organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD) witho ut affecting either the dark current or capacitance of the photodiode. The polarization-preserving nature of the waveguides suggests that a patterned substrate significantly influences the organic molecular ori entation during vacuum deposition.
