The formalism of the response of a ribbed membranelike panel that carr
ies a single propagation type is recalled. The equation of motion is c
ast in a scalar form. The formalism is then extended to a ribbed membr
anelike panel that simultaneously carries two propagation types. The e
quation of motion is cast in a matrix form of rank 2. The formalism of
the flexural response of a ribbed plate also admits to a matrix form
of rank 2 and is akin to the formalism of the panel that carries two p
ropagation types. However, fundamental differences also exist between
these two formalisms. These differences are discussed and examined.
