Follicular stasis was diagnosed in three green iguanas (Iguana iguana)
and one savannah monitor( Varanus exanthematicus) by history, physica
l examination, survey radiography, and serum biochemical analyses. Ult
rasonography was helpful in confirming radiographic findings. Elevated
serum calcium levels, radiographic evidence of multiple round coelomi
c opacities, and a history of lethargy and partial to complete anorexi
a were considered diagnostic in all four cases. Ovariectomy was consid
ered the most viable therapeutic option because of the severity of the
animals' clinical signs. The rapid response to surgical bilateral ova
riectomy in these cases indicates ovariectomy is a valid therapy for s
ingly housed, female pet lizards with follicular stasis.
