The underlying goal of GIS/LIS '93 . Hungary was to accelerate Europea
n integration of GIS/LIS technology and information bases to support d
ecision-making by governments, nongovernment organizations, business,
and private citizens. This article presents the background and finding
s of a commissioned taskforce that was designed to: (a) provide feedba
ck and documentation on the 1993 conference; (b) suggest directions fo
r future GIS/LIS meetings in Eastern and Central Europe; (c) serve as
a benchmark for measuring and gauging progress made towards the overal
l integration goal, and (d) provide a foundation upon which to constru
ct a cumulative body of knowledge on the topics, methods, and experien
ces considered at subsequent conferences in the series.
