The purpose of this paper is to present some of the microwave sensors
developed at the Institut d'Electronique et de Microelectronique du No
rd, that can address a wide variety of applications in the fields of d
omotic, automotive, robotic communication and hyperthermia. The recent
emergence of Microwave Monolithic Circuits MMIC's together with the d
evelopment of collective microtechnologies and quasi-optical technique
s enable the design of low cost microwave sensors that can detect refl
ected or transmitted electromagnetic waves from a microwave source or
microwave emitted by black bodies. These unique features of microwaves
have been advantageously used to realize microwave automatic cooking
process control, radar and communication front ends, accurate robot lo
calization systems and biomedical applicators that are briefly describ
ed in the paper.
