The results of studying LiF:Mg,Cu,P with the X ray diffraction method
show that three kinds of crystalline material are produced in the proc
ess of the preparation of LiF:Mg,Cu,P phosphors. They are polycrystall
ine LiF, Li4P2O7 and a new polycrystalline material whose component an
d structure has not been determined, but its occurrence in the prepara
tion process of the phosphor is closely related to TL sensitivity of t
he phosphor. The ESR spectra of LiF:Mg,Cu,P shows that during irradiat
ion with gamma rays, the oxygen in the LiF:Mg,Cu,P lost an electron an
d phosphorus captured an electron, and the chemical valence of the Cu
impurity was not changed.
