A newly designed two-dimensional corona-excited slit nozzle discharge
is described and its first applications for direct absorption spectros
copy of molecular ions in a supersonic expansion in the infrared (NO+)
and far-infrared (N2H+). The results are discussed and it will be sho
wn that under the conditions described, for N2H+ linewidths of 750 kHz
and rotational temperatures of 12 K can be achieved.
