M. Deyrup, 2 NEW GRASSHOPPERS FROM RELICT UPLANDS OF FLORIDA (ORTHOPTERA, ACRIDIDAE), Transactions of the American Entomological Society, 122(4), 1996, pp. 199-211
Two new species of nightless acridid grasshoppers. Melanoplus nanciae
and Melanoplus ordwayae are described from Florida scrub habitat on is
olated sand ridges in peninsular Florida. They are members of a group
of 5 species that show evolutionary divergence on ''islands'' of scrub
. Habitat-specific flightless grasshoppers may be particularly useful
in biogeographic analyses because divergence between lineages is quick
ly reflected in morphological changes in male genitalia. The two new s
pecies are examples of arthropods that are not even named before their
habitat is mostly destroyed.
