High-spin states in Hf-178 have been identified using particle-gamma-g
amma-time techniques and the incomplete fusion reaction, Yb-176(Be-9,a
lpha 3n) Hf-178. The rotational band associated with the four-quasipar
ticle T-1/2 = 31 year, K-pi = 16(+) isomer in Hf-178 has been establis
hed. The g(K)-g(R) values obtained from the in-band decay properties c
onfirm the configuration of the isomer as does its alignment which mat
ches the sum of the alignments of the two K-pi = 8(-) two-quasiparticl
e bands that contain the components of the 16(+) configuration. New in
formation has also been obtained on the four-quasiparticle 14(-) band
and on the two-quasiparticle 6(+) and 8(-) bands.
