Ivks. Sastry et al., EFFECT OF TIME-DELAY IN SPECIFIC GROWTH-RATE ON THE PERIODIC OPERATION OF BIOREACTORS WITH INPUT MULTIPLICITIES, Bioprocess engineering, 10(3), 1994, pp. 127-130
The effect of time delay in specific growth rate (mu) on the periodic
operation of bioreactors with input multiplicities is theoretically an
alyzed for productivity improvement. A periodic rectangular pulse is a
pplied either in feed substrate concentration (S(f)) or in dilution ra
te (D). Periodic operation under feed substrate concentration cycling
gives improvement in productivity at lower value of S(f)BAR of the two
steady-state multiplicities of S(f) only when the time delay in mu is
larger. Whereas the larger value of S(f)BAR gives improvement in aver
age productivity for all values of time delay. Dilution rate (D) cycli
ng gives an improvement in average productivity particularly for large
r time delay in mu. This improvement in average productivity is obtain
ed only at smaller value of dilution rate out of the two steady-state
input multiplicities of D.
