By means of a rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) it was found that in
LiBr + hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) solutions solvated electrons re
act very slowly with water, even at concentrations higher than 1 M. Th
e reaction of benzene with solvated electrons in LiBr + HMPA solutions
takes place only in the presence of a proton donor such as water. A s
econd-order reaction rate constant was determined for this reaction an
d was found to be 0.26 x 10(3) M-1 s-1 at a disk current of - 1.25 mA.
