A steam generating heat pump (SGHP) was developed and tested at the Na
tional Research Council (NRC) with a view to upgrading waste heat for
the pulp and paper and other industries. The SGHP is capable of satura
ted steam temperatures up to 135-degrees-C (275-degrees-F). For heat p
ump applications up to 80-degrees-C (76-degrees-F) NRC evaluated refri
gerant HFC-134a. This type of heat pump could recover waste heat from
the exhaust air of a paper machine and preheat pocket ventilation air.
