R. Vonbothmer et al., INTERGENERIC HYBRIDIZATION AND C-BANDING PATTERNS IN HORDELYMUS (TRITICEAE, POACEAE), Plant systematics and evolution, 189(3-4), 1994, pp. 259-266
Crosses of Hordelymus europaeus (2n = 4x = 28) with four genera in the
Triticeae were attempted. Adult hybrids were obtained in combinations
with Hordeum bogdanii (2x), Hordeum depressum (4x), and Secale cereal
e (2x). The meiotic pairing was very low in the hybrids with H. bogdan
ii and Secale cereale (0.12 and 0.30 chiasmata/cell, respectively), wh
ereas high pairing (9.90 chiasmata/cell) was found in hybrids with H.
depressum due to autosyndetic pairing of H. depressum chromosomes. The
chromosome complement of Hordelymus europaeus comprised 16 metacentri
cs, 8 submetacentrics, and 4 SAT-chromosomes. The Giemsa C-banding pat
terns of the chromosomes were characterized by small to minute bands a
t no preferential positions. It is hypothesized that Hordelymus europa
eus may genomically be closest related to Taeniatherum and Psathyrosta
chys spp.
