Complex formation of ions of rare-earth elements (nickel and cobalt) w
ith the maleic acid-vinyl acetate copolymer was studied in aqueous sol
utions of different acidity. The sorption capacity of the copolymer wa
s determined as a function of the pH of the solution and the concentra
tion of the europium, samarium, lanthanum, nickel, and cobalt ions at
constant ionic strength mu = 0.1 under static conditions using equilib
rium dialysis. The stability constants for the complexes of this copol
ymer with these metals were calculated on the basis of the data of equ
ilibrium dialysis. It is suggested to use this copolymer as a masking
agent for the ions of rare-earth elements when determining nickel and
cobalt.
