Dg. Smith, A REEVALUATION OF GORDIUS-AQUATICUS-DIFFICILIS MONTGOMERY, 1898 (NEMATOMORPHA, GORDIOIDEA, GORDIIDAE), Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 145, 1994, pp. 29-34
The nematomorph species Gordius aquaticus difficilis, originally descr
ibed from a single specimen, has been placed in synonymy with either G
. robustus or G. paranensis by some recent authorities. Recent collect
ions of several specimens fitting the description of G. a. difficilis
has allowed a more critical study of the anatomy and morphology of thi
s form. Light and scanning microscopical studies of the cuticle of adu
lts of each sex have revealed characters peculiar to G. a. difficilis
. It is concluded on the basis of these investigations that G. a. diff
icilis represents a distinct species, Gordius difficilis.
