Abstract
This paper briefly reviews the use of Schiff base substrates in amino acid synthesis. Recent studies lead to the proposal of a new active ca talyst species (12) for the asymmetric PTC alkylation of active methyl ene compounds (2). Mechanistic implications are detailed.
