The alluvial aquifer of Oued Laou has an area of 18 km(2) and an avera
ge ground-water resource of 17.1 hm(3) year(-1) the mean saturated thi
ckness fluctuates between 40 and 60 m, and the transmissivity values r
ange from 500-4000 m(2) day(-1). The main chemical facies are magnesiu
m and calcium carbonate, with salt content varying from 200 to 600 mg
1(-1). The construction of a new dam across the Laou river and the rai
sing of an already existing dam threaten to change the hydrogeological
functioning of the river/aquifer system.
